Capitello con scene tratte dal Genesi

XII secolo (1178 ca)

Description

The structure of this capital is identical to the previous one and the scenes continue according to the story of Genesi. The first episode is the Cacciata dal Paradiso Terrestre: an angel with a raised sword, dressed in a cloak held on the left shoulder (part of the sword and the angel’s wing have fallen off), pushes the naked Progenitors out of Paradise, while they turn back and cover their nakedness.

The scene of Work follows: Adam, covered by a simple skirt, is busy hoeing the earth while Eve, wearing the same clothing, is spinning.
The third side is occupied by Cain and Abel in the act of offering to God the fruits of their labor in front of a barely visible altar; both wear a short tunic and a cloak and have their hands covered as a sign of devotion. The story ends with the killing of Abel, who is depicted in the act of falling while Cain, above him, hits him on the head. Although substantially identical in structure to the previous piece, this piece presents some differences, such as the lack of those scenographic elements that served as a frame and background to the other Old Testament scenes and a much more limited use of the drill.
